What to Work On... Part One: AnatomyI glanced at roughly 20-30 rejected galleries. And I started to notice a trend. There was a deficiency in knowledge of anatomy. People think they can cheat it, people think they can use coloring skills to hide it. But the problem is, that when you attempt to cheat anatomy, the only way you can do so reliably is to actually KNOW what you're cheating. And hiding it, well, when you're submitting for a job, the first thing the bosses will note is hands and feet. How well do you draw them? How well do you understand them? This is no joke. Hands and feet are the dead giveaway.
Now the problem is, how does one go about learning anatomy? Nothing out there will make up for taking an actual life drawing class, but having some good "teachers" via books and sometimes videos and guides is very useful... There are tons of really bad books on anatomy. But there are some

We hear and see things like this all the time and people with the middle to high range art skills know these comments are just not true. As author Geoff Colvin says in his book by the same title, "Talent is overrated," and really it is. There is no such thing as one person being born super talented and another having none at all or other such myths in art like that. The only difference between you the beginner artist and that artist way up at the top is hard work, smart work and time.
One major study (listed in 'Talent Is Overrated') showed that there was no such thing as the ‘talented’ elite who hardly work and just come out on top. It was found that there was no such thing as the person who just worked super hard consistently

You don't need an expensive art course to learn and progress, sometimes the answers are not far away. Check out this great tutorial site.I stumbled upon this website yesterday, thanks to a person I'm following on my FA account. The site itself is: http://www.ctrlpaint.com/
It has lots of useful tips and resources that focus mostly in adopting the right attitude when it comes do creating art digitally. You won't see your usual step-by-step videos that concentrate on teaching you how to draw a specific subject, but more like something of general importance. Which is great, in my opinion, because lots of people tend to put in the limelight only a certain aspect or a technique, creating a blockage in your mind whenever you try to step outside the box.
What I liked the most about this tutorial site (and I'm usually a picky bastard, since I rarely have the patience to watch/follow tutorials of any sort) is that it's extremely well organized and that it applies for everyone, from beginners to intermediate to advanced artists. They are meant to be quick and rough just to help get your creative juices flowing.

Make a list of random, funny, whatever words or objects to represent every letter of the alphabet.
Then think of one more random word. Now you can match up the letters of that word to your list leaving you with certain objects or words. (Confused yet

Now draw a picture or write a story tying those things together!

Take a blank sheet of paper.
Scribble randomly (circles, figure eights, everything) all over the paper for 3 to 5 seconds. (Best if you use a lighter color)
Now go back and look at your scribble and find objects or designs in it.
With a darker color go in and outline your objects and add detail.

It's perfectly fine on ms paint or photoshop or painter, but as soon as I try to draw things online, it seems like it's laggy and won't draw smoothly unless I press and hold down the pen, which is not how a sketcher draws.

GlassI have been saying for quite some time that I have no idea why so many of you choose to watch and be interested in my work. Often the response comes from you that it's talent, but I am adamant that is not the answer. When I browse the Artisan galleries, I see so many skilled artisans getting next to no recognition for their work. Artists who are after much more skilled that I am, some to the point of being professionals in their field.

Hello all! I am very excited that the skin tutorial is finally going live. Hope you all find it useful.

Thanks for being so patient.

As I mention, knowing your color theory and anatomy is vital to painting skin well. Someone has already asked for resources on color theory, so it seems logical to post this list in a journal so everyone see it:

WOW thank you so much! for the skin tutorials and the links, they're so helpful I am just now going into color and I couldn't figure out why my skin looked so dull, I heard many artist say use a wide range of colors but they never explained how and when I did it was a mess until your skin tutorial came and gave me ideas of some colors I can use to render skin I got so excited

And thank you for the great links you have provided us, they're all great but the best one had to be the image FX (Phil Straub : Color Theory Simplified) one for me, I have read color theory quit a few times but it never really told me how I can apply this to my painting, I understood primary's etc. but never how can this help my painting until the 1st link showed me the color schemes and it all made perfect sense. So thank you very much and after 2 years I think I finally understanding color
