Sample image of something more genre-oriented. I solemnly swear the next thing I upload with be back to our regular programming. ;)

I painted this in short bursts over a couple of months, and during that period I changed my painting technique a little. So I feel this image is a little disjointed but it's probably only noticeable to me, or at least at full resolution, hahah.

Photoshop and Painter as always.

Great mood to this, you can practically feel the lightning crackle!

Nice work, well done with the lightning. The flow of the dress and the small details are also very good, especially how it almost blends in with the sky behind her.
I have to say the lifted leg looks a little odd, a little masculine perhaps? I am envious of how well you painted the foot though. Of all the body parts, I swear feet are the hardest to draw!

I love her expression, even though she's "casting" lightning, she looks at peace and almost happy.

Interesting. The character gives a real impression of power with the electrical arcs and the way she doesn't seem to be under any strain.

This is fascinating, Lauren. It really makes me want to have another go at Painter. I shall have to thank Cris for asking her questions.

We've been shoving furniture around at two houses for several weeks now. Short version: my studio is no longer in the living room. I can hardly wait to begin smearing pigments and pixels around canvases again.

On an anatomy note, it seems to me that the thighs, knees and calves are a bit too massive and muscular for a woman. Otherwise, it's amazing work, as usual ! :)

Maybe for an idealized woman. I know plenty of girls with thicker legs. My own legs are slender, but just as muscular as what I painted here.

You have a point here. We shouldn't look for idealized bodies, 'cause perfection is so boring, heh? Keep up your good work! It's always a small event when you post a new piece :)

Sometimes you just need to conjure some lightning. Is that a tornado in the background? Also, nice job on the foot.

Love the muted palette!

I think the composition would work better with a more stretched leg in the front, though.

I'm interested, Lauren, what do you use PS for and what do you use Painter for? (I sometimes flop back and forth too...)

I use both all over... color block and initial render in PS. Skin gets tossed to Painter then back to PS for detailing if necessary. Hair and cloth are all Painter after the initial rendering stage. Background elements in this image are mostly PS but that's because I did the background months ago; if I were painting it now I'd do it much differently, more 50-50 (see my Mountainside image... the background there is largely Painter and much better for it.)

So the long and short of it is, Painter tends to be my middle-to-end stage, with PS picking up the slack for more detailed areas or to smooth out parts where Painter got carried away. I always use both though, in just about every part of my pictures.

Interesting! I find Painter's lack of precision a boon AND a bane. It's fantastic for brushiness, but not all accidents are happy. Thanks for the 411!

Holy WOWWWWWWWWW. Unlike the commenter below me, I think the dress is fine. if it was any twistier or flarier it would make the painting about the dress, rather than the power being channelled through the rest of the piece.

Absolutely LOVE this.

I love her foot, I think its the most realistic part of the painting. I think her dress could probable flare out a bit more if that's a twister in the background. great job non the less

lovely~ I always enjoy seeing a difference between surfaces. Here the skin vs. the cloth of the dress is painted completely different. It sort of highlights both things. The dress gives a soft and feminine flow to an otherwise harsh and powerful picture.
